Free Online Site Will Provide GIS Resources for Individuals Aiming to Solve Geographic Challenges in the Region
Esri, the global leader in location intelligence today announced the launch of the Central Asia and Caucasus Geoportal. The new online site provides individuals with free access to data, geographic information system (GIS) tools, and training resources. Users who sign up will be part of a collaborative platform that encourages innovation and advocacy for important causes in local and regional communities.
The first free, collaborative GIS portal for the region, the geoportal will equip existing GIS for Central Asia community groups and Central Asia Geospatial LinkedIn groups so they can have more coordinated impact and growth. To date, many open source and open data sites have been used to share data in the region but lacked the tools and necessary learning materials to fully engage with Esri’s GIS technology.
“Esri is committed to enabling communities in the Central Asia and Caucasus region to better understand regional issues using the power of mapping and analytics,” said Sohail Elabd, Esri general manager for the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia region. “The new Central Asia and Caucasus Geoportal will provide users with access to the latest GIS capabilities and data from Esri like the Living Atlas of the World so they can solve local challenges to the best of their abilities.”
Part of Esri’s mission is to enhance understanding and involvement in critical issues through geospatial technology. The Central Asia and Caucasus Geoportal will empower students, educators, and GIS professionals to take a geographic approach to some of the challenges facing their communities. Issues such as climate change, natural resource utilization, population growth, and conservation are all location-related in various ways. The geoportal provides access to industry-leading spatial analytics capabilities and authoritative data enabling users to more effectively collaborate, and make better-informed decisions.
For more than three decades Esri has actively supported GIS users in the Central Asia region, and over the past six years has continued this initiative by establishing regionally focused community GIS portals. The most recent of these, the Central Asia and Caucasus Geoportal, will be announced at the 2024 GIS in Central Asia Conference at the Kyrgyz State Technical University in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on 30th May 2024.
