BIALL to double donation commitment to BAILII

The British and Irish Association of Law Librarians have agreed to continue their donation commitment to BAILII and will be doubling the commitment to £10,000 for the next three years.

BAILII, The British and Irish Legal Information Institute (http://www.bailii.org) is a non-profit making charitable trust which aims to promote the service and public access to primary legal materials in general. The charity maintains an interactive database of full text primary legal materials, known as BAILII, which is available without charge on the Internet. The service is a major tool for legal research and the continued availability and development of the service is of major importance to the practice and teaching of law. BAILII makes its website available on a subscription-free basis for the benefit of the public, including pro bono organisations, neighbourhood law centres, students and users in developing countries. The BAILII database has on average in excess of 45,000 requests a day.

The British and Irish Association of Law Librarians has supported BAILII since 2010, by contributing £5,000 each year to assist with the maintenance of the legal database. The decision to double the donation was agreed by BIALL members at the recent BIALL 43rd Annual Study Conference in Belfast (June 2012). This increased commitment will bring the total contribution to date to £15,000.

BIALL president James Mullan said: "I'm delighted that BIALL members have voted to increase the funding we provide BAILII. BAILII is an excellent source of primary legal materials and is often used by law librarians to locate transcripts not available from other sources. This additional funding will ensure BAILII can continue to develop this resource for all of its users"
