The ten best-designed intranets of 2016 have been unveiled by usability experts the Nielsen Norman Group (NNG). Four winners come from Europe and six from North America. The winning companies include the Swedish Parliament; global construction company Salini Impregilo SpA from Italy; Spanish energy company Repsol SA; and DORMA, a German company which produces door technology systems.
The average intranet team consisted of 14 people, with team sizes ranging from Respol with a team of 4 supporting 17,000 employees to DORMA with a team of 24 (5 in the design core team and 19 additional project members) supporting 7.500 employees.
All 10 winning organisations called in external agencies and consultants to assist in a wide variety of project deliverables, including branding, information architecture, SharePoint implementation and video creation.
On average, the winning teams took 1.3 years to create their sites. Many of the winning teams took iterative approaches to redesign, with some using rapid development processes such as Agile methodology to reduce the time needed to create the intranet.
According to NNG, the 2016 winners “impress … with design prowess, content support, UX research, responsive design, modern visuals, and SharePoint pushed to its limits.”
