The author is an algorithm

Springer Nature has published its first machine-generated chemistry book.

Lithium-Ion Batteries: A Machine-Generated Summary of Current Research features “a cross corpus auto summarisation of current research articles”.

The aim is the help researchers manage the information overload of the fast- growing field of lithium-ion batteries.

Working with researchers from Goethe University Frankfurt/Main, Springer Nature has developed an algorithm called Beta Writer.

The algorithm selects and processes relevant publications from across Springer’s content platform SpringerLink.  The algorithm then arranges the source documents into coherent chapters and sections, creates summaries of each article and creates tables of content, references and introductory material. Readers can click through to full articles.

Springer Nature plans to expand this pilot project into other subject areas.  You can see the book here.
