Russia: Government help for publishing

Government to provide funds to assist with the publication of over 500 new titles.

The Russian book market has been in decline. Sales in 2012 were down 10.5% and book production figures ae down 35% from 2008.

The Bookseller is today reporting that the Russian government is planning to help the domestic book publishing industry with an investment of up to RUB 3bn (£63m).  The funds will come from the Culture of Russia arts funding programme.

Preference will be given to scientific and technical works. There will also be increased funding for book fairs and competitions for books for children and young adults.  The government is also reported to be considering the abolition of VAT on books.
