Rare map discovered in German university library

A previously lost 'sensational' map naming America has resurfaced after more than 100 years.

Librarians at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich have found a 500-year old map which had been mis-filed in the 19th century.

The map, by the famous German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller, is thought to be a smaller and more recent version of the 1507 Waldseemüller map that named the newly discovered continent of America.  Four other smaller versions of the map were known to exist before this discovery - one of which was sold in 2005 for $1 million.

The library intends to digitise the map.
