Netherlands: photocopying ID is illegal

The Dutch Data Protection Authority (CBP) has warned organisations that they are breaking the law if they ask customers for photocopies of ID.

Although it is normal for companies to check on identities, keeping photocopies of passports can contribute to identify fraud and in many cases is illegal.

The CBP has drawn up guidelines informing citizens of their rights in this matter.
