Launched in 1998, New Journal of Physics (NJP) is published by IOP Publishing and co-owned by the Institute of Physics (UK) and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.
The journal sets out to exploit the opportunities of online publishing to make physics research as accessible as possible. Authors will now be able to personally present their work to a global audience.
One of the first authors to take up this opportunity, Neil Wilson of the University of Warwick, UK, is clear about the advantages: "Embracing the possibilities of online media in this way allows us to present our work as we see it, and helps focus interested readers on what we believe the key points to be. We hope that being able to put faces to names, and visualise some of the research in action, will add a human touch and so help the scientific community to grow closer".
