Murder in the Library

British Library exhibition explores the history of crime fiction.

A new exhibition at the British Library will feature manuscripts, printed books, artworks, audio recordings and other artefacts.  Authors featured include the familiar (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and some unexpected writers of the genre (including burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee).

Exhibition highlights of ‘Murder in the Library: an A-Z of crime fiction' include:

  • The manuscript of the Sherlock Holmes short story The Adventure of the Retired Colourman
  • John Gielgud's annotated script for the film of Murder on the Orient Express
  • Original material relating to real-life crimes, including some relating to the Road House murders (covered in The Suspicions of Mr Whicher)
