Germany: copyright law update

Publishers in Germany now have the exclusive right to the commercial use of their content online.


As previously reported, the law is intended to limit the free use of news by search engines and aggregators and governs how these services can display this content. 

Publisher Axel Springer (publisher of the German newspapers Welt and Bilt), was one of the publsihers lobbying for the law to be extended and has stated that they are still exploring ways in which they ca charge Google for using their materials.  However for now, Axel Springer, along with many other publishers, have chosen to opt in to Google News.
