European Commission and copyright reform

The European Commission has been explaining its plans for copyright reform.

Part of the package includes granting media companies with publishers’ rights, meaning that platforms would have to pay to host news stories or snippets.  Publishers groups have welcomed the move saying it would help guarantee media pluralism.  They claim that publishers contribute to the success of platforms by providing high quality content, but that platforms did not share their profits fairly.  This proposal comes despite the failure of similar schemes in Germany and Spain.

Another proposal is that platforms should publish figures about the profits they generate through the use of copyrighted material.
