Elsevier buys Mendeley

Mendeley provides a collaboration and social networking platform to the research and academic communities.  Rumours of the acquisition began to surface earlier this year and have now been confirmed.

The move commits Elsevier to the world of open and social academic data. 

Elsevier has stated that Mendeley will continue as a separate platform and distinctive brand.  Mendeley's API will remain free and open.
