EU committee opinion on data protection

EESC calls for expanded scope of data protection reforms.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has published an official opinion about European data protection reforms stating that Europe's approach to reform should be "more in line with the ... expectations of the public".

The current EC proposals are seeking to introduce a single data protection law for all EU member states.  The EESC opinion calls for social networks, search engines and some cloud computing services to be brought into the scope of these proposed reforms.  The EESC has also expressed its concern about the number of exceptions and restrictions in the current proposals.
