“Disappointing” response to library funding campaign

A UK petition signed by 30,000 called for ringfenced funding.

The UK government’s response to a campaign of support for public libraries has been called “hugely disappointing” by campaigners.

The petition called for funding to be ringfenced to protect libraries against closure and cuts. The campaign attracted high profile supporters including JK Rowling and Neil Gaiman.

The government said that councils would retain flexibility over funding decisions. Campaigners say that the government has greatly reduced funding to local councils.  Campainers are now urging thousands mor to sign the petition. If 100,000 people sign a petition, the motion must be discussed in Parliament.
