British Library celebrates the Gothic imagination

Gothic literature has entertained audiences and influenced artists for 250 years.

A new exhibition at the British Library is celebrating 250 years since the publication of the first Gothic novel.

Terror and Wonder: the Gothic imagination includes manuscripts of classic novels including Dracula and Jane Eyre and traces how Gothic sensibilities continue to influence modern day authors and film makers.

Many of the British Library’s literary treasures are now available digitally and the Discovering Literature website features additional resources to complement the exhibition.
